Keeping toxins out of the nursery is especially important as your baby’s developing immune, hormonal, and nervous systems are more susceptible to them than adults are. Most standard plywood furniture releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Conventional mattresses are made from petroleum products such as polyurethane foam, nylon, polyester, and vinyl, and are then treated with chemical fire retardants, all of which your baby will breathe in. Permanent press sheets are also treated with formaldehyde and can cause skin irritations.

Reclaim offers healthier choices for outfitting your baby’s room. Cribs and nursery furniture from Q Collection Junior are made in America using solid wood sourced within 100 miles of the production facility. Q Collection Junior’s crib was the first to receive Greenguard certification, proving that their water-based, non-toxic finishes do not off-gas and their furniture contains no polyurethane or formaldehyde. Finish off your healthy crib with a natural rubber crib mattress and organic bedding in solids or unique patterns. We also have organic bedding for toddler and twin-sized beds. Looking for a gift for an eco-conscious mother-to-be? Check out our green baby accessories such as BPA-free bottles from Green to Grow and Adiri, organic belly oil and baby balm from Baby Bear Shop, and locally made organic blankets. Banish plastic bags from your child’s lunch with Kids’ Konserve organic lunch sacks. We carry their entire line of products, from the stainless steel food containers to the BPA-free reusable sandwich cozies and metal thermoses.

What is BPA?
Bisphenol A is a developmental, reproductive, and neural toxicant found in polycarbonate plastic—the material used to make the vast majority of baby bottles. Green to Grow developed a baby bottle that is free from this hormone-disrupting chemical.
What is FSC-certified?
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, an international not-for-profit organization that promotes responsible forest management. They not only make sure that the wood harvesting is legal, but that the rights of workers and indigenous communities are respected, endangered wildlife habitats are not negatively affected, and that the manufacturing and distribution of the wood is done correctly. Basically, they worry about all of that so that you can have peace of mind when you buy raw lumber, wood floors, trim, cabinets, or furniture. Go to www.fscus.org for more information.
What’s a VOC?
VOC stands for volatile organic compound. The American Lung Association states that VOCs can cause eye and skin irritation, lung and breathing problems, headaches, nausea, muscle weakness, and liver and kidney damage. When you buy or use a product that emits VOCs indoors, you are contributing to poor indoor air quality. Because so many materials and substances in our homes emit VOCs (such as plywood or particleboard furniture, vinyl shower curtains, some resilient flooring and carpet, mattresses and upholstery treated with fire retardants, etc.), the air quality inside your home can be 10 times worse than it is outside. And that number can get up to 1,000 times worse right after you apply a high-VOC product like oil-based paint. The VOCs released inside your home eventually migrate outdoors where they mix with other substances in the air and turn into ozone, which is a component of smog. This is why using low-VOC or no-VOC products and keeping materials that emit VOCs out of your home is good for your family’s health and the environment.
